The arcade houses in Peterholzstraße in the south of Dessau have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2017. The five houses were designed by Bauhaus director and architect Hannes Meyer and completed in 1930 after a construction period of just eight months. The apartments were affordable, especially for social classes with low incomes, and were also modern by the standards of the time. The special feature of these houses is not least the striking arcades, which ensure that all apartments on one level can be reached via a single staircase.
In 2021, the arcade house at Peterholzstrasse 48 was completely renovated in line with conservation standards. This also included the installation of a new elevator system in the existing building to ensure accessibility. In order to gain space for the elevator system, some of the adjacent living space was used. New walls were installed in the apartments. As the elevator guide rail fixings are directly adjacent to the apartment walls, special measures had to be taken to comply with the legally prescribed sound insulation of 30 dB in the neighboring living rooms and bedrooms.
The solution was JAI-R elevator insulation from the PohlCon brand JORDAHL. The JAI-R is particularly suitable for elevators which, as here in Dessau, require a backpack suspension due to the limited space available. The sound insulation provides acoustic decoupling between the elevator guide rail and the shaft wall, thus ensuring a significant reduction of up to 26 dB in structure-borne noise. With the exception of the shaft head, all fixing levels were fitted with elevator insulation.
The JAI-R was fastened to previously installed JTA W 40/22 anchor channels from JORDAHL. Due to their specific manufacturing process, the hot-rolled channels are particularly suitable for dynamic loads such as in elevator systems. Together with our anchor channels, the elevator insulation represents a system solution that ensures sound insulation in the adjoining rooms and at the same time enables the elevator to be securely suspended.
